Exposing Self to Overcome Panic

I said the other day I was going to have a bath yesterday morning. Well, I did. I didn’t have high anxiety about it as I’ve had in the past.

It took me five minutes to get in the bath. I sat there while lukewarm water was filling up. I only let the water go to hip height. I couldn’t relax, even with my other half in the room. I guess it takes time for that.

I managed up to fifteen minutes. So, in the end, even though I haven’t completed my goal of relaxing in the bath for at least twenty minutes. I made progress.

I decided to take a chance on the bath yesterday from what was said in my group councilling session. If there is a situation that causes you to panic. In order to overcome the panic or the cause, is to expose yourself to the situation. In my case, having a bath.

Each time you expose yourself, stay for as long as it takes for you to calm yourself down a little, before removing yourself from the situation. Doing this each time, you expose yourself to the situation until you overcome the panic.

Meaning over time you will be able to go into the panic causing situation without any panic coming up. Which for all involved must be a great feeling; not having to panic.

Don’t get me wrong, this may only work for certain people or situations. Me panicking in a bath may not be understandable to you. Hell, it isn’t for me either. But for some unknown reason, I had panic attacks in them.

I suppose I could try with my fear of spiders. But let’s concentrate on one panic at a time.

Would you want to expose yourself to what causes you to panic to help you overcome the panic?
