‘It’ll be worth it’

It’s been a busy and fun packed weekend. The house is coming along. The 3rd bedroom looks like a proper room. The bathroom now has a door frame. The main bedroom has a wall. We’re learning new skills.

R came to see the house for the 1st time. The in-laws came to see how it’s progressing and brought Dave nephew to visit.

Last night we went over to York Racecourse for the Beer and Cider Festival, for which we were invited to by L as her birthday activity. I don’t drink plus I was driving. So the drinking part wasn’t my thing. There was only 1 cart for soft drinks. Even so, it was a lovely evening.

I didn’t feel too good when I woke this morning, it was like I was hungover due to too much food rather than alcohol. With working on the house it took my mind off it and I felt better. 2 more days and then the electrician starts. It’ll be at a standstill for us to be able to do anything. It’s coming together. It’ll soon be a month since we got the keys and we’ve come so far in that short time, it’ll be worth it.

No Fear of Missing Out

I had less fear of missing out with the house today. I knew I was getting there eventually and I’ve the weekend to get more work done. The skip cane at lunch. After an hour I got a message from my mum that we need another.

When I got to the house, I found my father in law had started the gardening. I can see a wall and a broken fence at the end of the yard now. New fence will have to go on our list now.

I joined my mum in removing the wall paper. She had started in bedroom number 2. This one was a lot harder then the first bedroom. The amount of paint on the walls, wow. Once bedroom 2 is finished it’s the living room.

I found out today that the bathroom is also papered. Who papers a bathroom?

We had 2 plasterers come round for a quote. The first didn’t show up or give us notice. The second was late but did notify us. They’re happy to do the job. Knew what they were talking about and happy for us to do what we can to cut cost down.

B and D and my grandad came to visit the house to have a nosey. The work is tiring but it’s getting done. Which is the main thing. There’s a chance we could be in by Christmas.

A Fear Of Missing Out Feeling

I had that fear of missing out feeling when I was working this morning. With my parents and Dave being in the house. Dave brought the kitchen ceiling down. It made everyone black with muck. My Grandma was asking if they were trying out as chimney sweeps.

My step-dad took out all but the toilet in the bathroom and all radiators. My mum was near the end of finishing stripping the wallpaper in the hallway. Also, my step-dad found the entry point to the water to our house so the stop tap could be added. It wasn’t the one found the other day. That’s our neighbours one!

It just happens to be in our house. So ours must be coming in through our other neighbours. Strange way of building.

When I was able to join everyone I helped finished off the hallway and we did our bedroom too. My step-dad started the removing the pipes so they can be replaced. When coming to lift up the second bedroom carpet he found he was unable to. Previous owners had built the wall on top of the carpet!

Luckily that particular wall is one that we wanted to knock down. It was just sooner than expected. The cellar guy came today and so did the second electrician. We’re waiting for their quotes, then we’ll decide. I need to talk to mum tomorrow, I was unable to tonight as I went out with Dave’s parents to the theatre.

It was lovely. It was the youth group production of Les Mes. It brought a tear to my eye. Once I got back everyone was in bed. Guess it’s my turn now.

My Life Is Changing – I Give a F**k About Bins!

Happy Birthday to my step-dad! No work on the house today. Unfortunately, the cellar and gas man cancelled, so we don’t have a quote for that work. I did, however, go over to the house. It was bin day, so I wanted to go put them away.

Apart of me felt like someone had been in the house. I may just be paranoid but a gold sticker, I had no knowledge of or had any reason to be there suddenly was. I could be paranoid.

To save money on new doors and windows I’ve requested new locks/handles to be put in. This should take the paranoia away. If not, we have a ghost.

We’ve heard from our mortgage. We know when payments are starting. I like that they give us a full month before payments come out. I contacted them for some general enquires, the guy on the phone was very helpful. I also contacted the water company and got our account set up. Two fewer things to think about.

With the home and life insurance sorted too, we’ve still got all the other bills to sort out. I’ve made the 1st purchase of home items since we got the keys. I like the fact my priority is the numbers for the bins. I do give a fuck about getting my bins back. Currently, I have no idea why but we have two household bins. I believe one is for next door. When the bins are emptied, I’ll give them one.

Dave, unfortunately, got a call today to say that his college class has been cancelled. It might be that his maths will be on hold for another year. He needs to contact the college to double check, but if they’re the same as enrollment, he can’t attend due to them being when he’s at work.

The brighter side of things, he still has to get up early to help my step-dad and mum with the house. I’ll join in the afternoon once I’ve finished work.

The House Work Has Started

We spent a good 6 hours at the house. Mum and I were concentrating on getting the wallpaper off in the hallway. The kitchen was the focus for my step-dad and Dave. They have got it to the bare brick. There are popes sitting there doing nothing, or piped up so that water is unable to be stopped with a stop tap.

Good job they’re all coming out and starting again. Same with the electrics. When ripping the kitchen out, my step-dad found that 3 outlets in the kitchen were wired so that they were power was coming out of a socket in the living room! No surprise when the electrician came out to quote extra sockets, that it needed a full rewire. They’re all about 50 years old.

But as we are already going back to bare brick with no one living in it yet, the quote was £2000-£2500 for the whole job. We’ve another coming in 2 days times. Which we said to the current one as well. After he’d been and gone a bit quoted £2000 on the dot.

Tomorrow there’s someone coming to quote for the cellar work. He is also a gas man so is gonna quote for that work too. Then another gas man is coming at the weekend to quote. The skip has been ordered. A trip to the bank is needed.

My parents met Dave’s; it went well. Dave’s parents stayed for under 2 hours. Dave’s mum joined us helping with the wallpaper. Tomorrow we are unable to do anything with the house. Back at it the day after.

On the wedding front, the centrepieces have arrived. I hope to collect these tomorrow. This evening was topped off with a meal at D&B house. It was lovely. B made lasagne and it was gorgeous.

August 2018 Been and Gone

I realised it’s the start of a new month and I haven’t done a review of August. It was 1st September when I wrote this in my journal. I haven’t words for August. It’s been and gone.

We got the keys to out own home on the last day. A goal achieved. I can cross that off. I want to see a new one – to have a Christmas dinner at ours in 2019. Allowing us to do the work and settle in.

We have the keys but we’re not there. We don’t have a kitchen to start. Dave and I went up this morning to sort the utilities with the company. With the odd removal of things on the walls. We also met one set of neighbours, they were really nice and I feel we’ll bet on well with them. The lady wants to take down our ivy. I gave her permission. My father in law may have a helper.

I was able to get my new glasses a week early. My left eye is slightly worse. I have dry eyes where I need to add drops into them. Otherwise my eyes are healthy.

My step dad and I went back to the house this afternoon. We had post from the solicitors. We’ve also received out help to buy bonus too. My step dad showed me the cellar. It had 3 inches of water in. We were able to get the pump there to work getting rid of some of it. We need a automatic pump in a sump done. It smells and had loads of things dumped down there.

A skip is due on Friday. My step dad also started ripping the kitchen shelving. He was trying to find the stop tap. We failed this time. It’s all coming out on Monday.

My mum has found some gas workers and an electrician so ringing them is the plan for tomorrow. Get some quotes.

I’m on my own this evening. Got the whole bed to myself. Dave is off round to D&B then staying at his parents. I’m up early for work. A busy day, not just working, we have a 1st birthday party and a family meal to attend.

I’ve been given an easier week in my rota this next week. So hopefully will be able to spend some time at the house. It feels good to be saying that.

We own a house!

We have the keys! We’re not in as we have the work to do. Once Dave was home from work we drove over to the house. We had a look around and measured up the kitchen. Figured out what and where we’d like things to be.

Dave and I started stripping wallpaper that we could without access to the steamer. I sorted out the post that was at the house. Tidied up and then the lovely business of the bills.

I started the water application. Sorted the council tax application. We were unable to sort the utilities as it’s needed to be done over the phone due to the current set up. We’ve found it’s not one we’d like so it’s one of my job’s tomorrow.

After a lovely walk back we made a plan with my parents on what’s next. My step dad is doing some of the work, so we needed an idea in place. Next week we’re getting a skip in place to begin sorting out the cellar and kitchen out. Making sure all is a shell before we can start a fresh.

Learn some new skills in the process.
